OUR BESTSELLERS: Master He Workshop Fine Concert Violins
Note: 1/2 size (ages 6-10), 3/4 size (ages 9-12), 4/4 (ages 12 and up)

Since 2006, the violin project has been exclusively distributing masterly copies of vintage violin, viola and cello models
(Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesù, Nicoló Amati, Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, Matteo Gofriller) made by the renowned
Guangzhou-based workshop under the superision of Master He Hung-Da. Under his leadership, several experienced
master makers, previously employed by other workshops or factories, formed a new company in 2004 to produce instruments on a
higher level. And indeed, in the years since then, there has been a remarkably constant string of fine quality instruments
from that workshop, relying on scientific knowledge about the selection and maturation of woods, varnishing & antiquing
and expert allround workmanship. Not to mention that these professional instruments come at a still very reasonable price!

It is no coincidence that were are carrying anything from this shop, from half- to full-size violins, to violas (15" -16.5") and cellos - it's because we have been completely satisfied with their quality over the years - and so are our customers! We received many enthusiastic comments from our clients (you can read some of them. in German, at the bottom of this page). And, mind you: We are talking about instruments that are suitable (and highly recommendable) to players of vastly different levels: from the ambitious beginners and aspiring students to seasoned amateur players and senior violin conservatory attendees. In several cases we have successfully sold them as back-up instruments to professional orchestra players, who came to our studio and realized the fine quality.

The backbone of these very fine instruments are selected- and top-quality woods from either China or Slovenia or Italy.
The workshop buys these high grade woods "pre-dried" from international tonewood dealers, then continues to
mature them for another 6 years minimum, builds the "white bodies" (finished instrument without varnish & set-up),
which are then dried for another two years. Only after that extended maturation period are they ready to be varnished (and, in most
cases, antiqued) according to the wishes of their customers. A single master is responsible for the varnishing of all the instruments,
which again contributes to the high standard this workshop is known for among insiders. The wood used for the parts (pegs,
fingerboards, chinrests and tailpieces) are of very fine quality, too: Ebony from Madagascar is used for the fingerboards because
this kind of ebony is known for its extreme durability. The company buys those from Bubenreuth in Germany! Pegs,
tailpieces andf chinrests are made of polished Indonesian ebony. The bridges are made by Despiau in France, the best
manufacturer of string instrument bridges in the world (*-***, depending on the grade). Slovenian tonewoods are
purchased in Germany, Italian spruce in Cremona. Nothing is left to chance, nothing is taken for granted!

And, of course, the workmanship itself: all violins, violas and cellos are made and varnished carefully by hand.
The characterful antiquing is a specialty of this workshop, and it contributes to the "vintage" sound; but of course,
for those who prefer their new instrument to look new, too, we also carry a selection of these. Please inquire!

The sound of the instruments, even before they have been "broken-in" (think of 100-150 hours of playing),
is remarkably beautiful, flexible and balanced - but of course it will even further improve with time. Also,
the response is quick and immediate, the soundstage open, and the requisite overtones needed for good
projection in the hall are there from the beginning. These characteristics are all important for the aspiring
student in particular, since he or she needs an instrument that is easily played, so he or she can concertrate
on improving their technical abilities. It is no conincidence either that we have often sold these workshop
violins, violas and cellos to music conservatories for senior students and scholarship holders to practice
and perform in live concerts. Or that many children have played on them when they took part in national competitions.

The workshop produces a variety of models (decribed in more detail below) because they differ in timbre and
character. Amatis and Strads usually sound more open and brilliant on the e-string, while on the d- and g-string
they are a little less powerful than the others. In contrast, the popular "Lord Wilton" model from Guanreri Del Gesù
will produce a warmer, altogether darker-hued sound, with a milder, slightly veiled e-string. The most famous of all,
perhaps, is Del Gesù's "Il Cannone" (so named by its former owner, Paganini) - and it unites the qualities of these
two extremes. These aren't differences in quality, but in character. To each player his or her own violin!
Differences in grade are generated by the selection of woods, mostly: We offer "selected Chinese woods" (spruce
from the Himalayans, maple from the Altai Mountains), "top-grade Chine woods" (dito), European "A"-grade
woods (from Slovenia), and, finally, Italian spruce and Slovenian maple. The instruments are priced accordingly.
As such, we recommend the different specimen as "concert violin orchestra", "concert violin ensemble", and
"concert violin solo". Each of these grades guarantees a bang for the buck second to none.

Hitherto you may have had to spend several thousands for a concert level violin, especially for those
older ones that come with a certificate! OTOH, you may have been disappointed with the flat sound
of a fiddle you ordered from Shanghai because "it seemed to be so cheap". And now you can't return it.

We have been specializing in high quality Chinese string instruments for the past 10 years. It is easy
to find a lot of low-grade violins, violas and cellos from there on the web. Believe us, it is not so easy
to find the good ones. They'll come at a price, but it's still a competitive one when compared with
the huge amounts you'll have to pay for true(!) European-made instruments. Buy with confidence!

The prices indicated are instrument-only, but of course you can add a bow (wood or carbon fibre)
and a deluxe case to create your own, unique outfit. Shoulder rests, resin and Wittner tailpieces
(i.e. with 4 fine tuners) are available too.

Please note that we are also carrying children's violins,
violas and cellos by the same workshop.

Sonderedition Amati Nr.1 Sonderedition Amati Nr.1Copies of Niccolò Amati

Nicoló Amati (aka Nicola or Nicolaus) lived between 1596 and 1684. He is considered the most important member of the Amati violinmaking "dynasty", which began with his grandfather Andrea Amati (1525-1577), the inventor of the violin in its "modern" form (as opposed to the viola da gamba). His "Charles IX" of 1564 is the oldest surviving violin, and it can be seen at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Nicoló used high quality woods for his instruments, and he is said to be the teacher of Antonio Stradivari and Andrea Guarneri, although their is insufficient evidence to support those claims.

Our Amati copies have a sweet, detailed sound on the e-string. Due to their dimensions, their timbre is rather bright and lean, which is one reason why they're favorites when people play baroque music. We only carry the Amati model with selected Chinese wood (€ 1,550), subject to availability.
Meisterkopie "Stradivari" Meisterkopie "Stradivari"Copies of Antonio Stradivari 1715

Stradivari 1715 "The Cremonese"/"ex-Joachim" - This fiddle, made during the so-called "golden era" in the career of Antonio Stradivari, is among the most frequently copied of instruments made by the Cremonese master - especially ever since Stradivari has become so wildly popular as a role model for violin makers from the 19th century onwards. The original was played by, among others, the famous Austrian virtuoso of the 1800s,  Joseph Joachim, a close friend of Robert Schumann's and of Brahms'. Since 1961, this violin has been exhibited at the Museum of Cremona (hence its nick).

Our copies of the Cremonese Strad have a brilliant, open e-string and powerful projection on the a- and d-strings. As is typical of Strad models, due to their dimensions, the g-string is a little leaner that that of a Guarneri or Guadagnini model.
We are carrying the LW in two versions, with selected Chinese woods (€1,550,-) and with top Chinese woods (€ 1,850,-) subject to availability.
Sunrise SunriseCopies of Antonio Stradivari 1677 "Sunrise" & 1699 "Greffuhle"

In the course of his long career, Antonio Stradivari made about 1,100 violins (though many of them in his later years, together with his two sons). Among these, there is a dozen Strads decorated with lavish oxhorn inlays on the violin top and bottom and carefully crafted ebony powder "drawings" on the sides and scroll. The most famous of these "decorated violins", which Stradivari made early in his career, are the 1677 so-called "Sunrise" and the 1699 "Greffuhle", named after a Belgian nobleman who once owned that instrument. At the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford you can see an original "decorated Strad" of 1683, which you can also on our site, here and here. The "Sunrise" and the "Greffuhle" differ slightly in the ebony decoration on the ribes & scroll, but the quality and price and the same.

The He Hung-Da master workshop only makes a few copies (3-4 per year) of these precious instruments, the decorations being executed with utmost care, in the same manner that Stradivari did. These are really finely crafted individual instruments. Don't go for the cheap, simplified knock-offs available from other, minor Chinese makers! We are carrying the "Sunrise" and the "Greffuhle" with top Chinese woods and/or Italian Spruce and Chinese maple (AAA, € 2,600,-) or with Italian spruce top and Slovenian maple (€ 3,000)
, subject to availablity. This is a very exclusive, limitede edition model. Its sound is comparable to that of the Cremonese.
Meisterkopie "Guadagnini" Meisterkopie "Guadagnini"Copies of Giovanni Battista Guadagnini

Giovanni Guadagnini (aka: Giambattista, 1711-1786), born near the Italian town of Piacenza, was one of the leading violin makers of his time. Scholars have subdivided his work into four phases, according to the places where he lived at the time: Piacenza, Milano, Parma and Torino. Guagagnini started working as a luthier from the age of 18. The instruments of the final years are generally considered his best.
Just like Guarneri Del Gesù and Amati he was a memeber of a violin-making "dynasty".

Our Guadagnini copies offer a full, fruity and balanced sound, a little stronger
on the g-string than the Strads e.g., and a little milder on the upper strings.
We are carrying this model with selected Chinese wood (€ 1,550,-) in
both antqiued and "transparent" (i.e. glossy) versions, subject to availability.
Meisterkopie "Lord WIlton" Meisterkopie "Lord WIlton"Copies of Guarneri Del Gesù 1742 "Lord Wilton"

In 1887 it was Seymour John Grey Egerton, fourth Lord of Wilton and a keen amateur violinist, who purchased this Del Gesù violin, which has since been known as the "(ex-)Lord Wilton". Later, it was owned for a number of years by the London-based violin seller W.E.Hill & Sons before it finally went to the international star violinist Sir Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999), who played it professionally for more than two decades. This particular violin is characterized by its obviously asymmetrical f-holes, and the special sound quality of the original has sometimes been attributed to this feature. It is not quite clear whether Del Gesù did this deliberately, or simply because he was more or less completely blotto all day every day at the time. Be that as it may, the "Lord Wilton" has become one of the most celebrated (and, thus, most often copied) of Del Gesù's many violins.

The "Lord Wilton" has been the bestseller among these fine workshop violins, presumably because it's slightly darker-hued, warm and full sound, with a slightly veiled e-string, appeals to many players & listeners. Of course, this is a matter of personal taste. We are carrying the LW in two versions, with selected Chinese woods (€1,550,-) and with top Chinese woods (€ 1,850,-).

Meisterkopie "Cannone" Meisterkopie "Cannone"Copies of Guarneri Del Gesù 1743 "Il Cannone"

This is probably the most famous and most often copied Del Gesú model.
The original was made a year before his death,, in 1743, and it was that
famous virtuoso
Nicolò Paganini (1782-1840) who gave it its nickname,
"Il Cannone" (The Cannon), because it was just so powerful. The original
can be seen at the Genua Museum
(Image). Del Gesù's late instruments differ
a lot from each other, down to very variable selection of woods. This is
often attributed to the luthier's severe alcoholism.

Our fine workshop copies of the "Cannon" are available in antiqued or
"transparent" (i.e. glossy) versions, usually with selected Chinese wood
(€ 1,450) or top Slovnian  wood (from € 1,700), subject to availability.
The sound combines the openness of the Strad copies on the e- and a-strings
with the full, warmer sound of the "Lord Wilton" model on the g-string.
These wonderful copies have been frequently lauded for their perfectly
balanced tone, even when new.
Jian JianMaster Violins ("Signature") (various models)

Only recently, the He Workshop has begun to turn out "signature violins",
individually made by their four most experienced makers. Each maker is
identified by the label. On the left you can see one of the first samples, a
wonderful Strad 1728 copy made by Jian Zi Feng - don't bother, it's already
been sold (and sold very quickly, too). The number of these highest-quality instruments will be very limited.

Each maker selects the model he is going to copy, as well as the varnish type
and the tonewoods - only AAA-grade Chinese spruce/maple, Slovenian
spruce and maple and Cremonese Italian spruce tops are being used for these
superb violins. The parts (pegs, tailpiece & chinrest) are supplied by one of
the world's finest specialized companies, the Italian Bogaro & Clemente.
The future prices for these instruments will be north of € 3,000.

Information Summary

Klang der neuen Violine sehr begeistert, was uns natürlich besonders freut!"

Gott segnet Sie."
Anna K.*, Bad Krozingen (12/08/08, über "Meisterkopie Guarneri")

"Hellier copy sounding great starting to open after 10 min.It is better than all French violin of last century execpt
Vuillaume, and Piqué maybe, and surpasses all modern Italians for sure. Even better than Gagliano i had."

(...) In jedem Fall

passendes Instrument schon in weite Ferne gerückt.

mehreren Tausend Euro mithalten. Beim nächsten Konzert wird sie
auch gleich zum Einsatz kommen. ...

Melanie A.*, Hannover (18/12/06, über "Guadagnini semi-antik")
