"Violin arrived safely. Fully satisfied." Nils M.*, Berlin (02/04/2011, on "Ji Brothers Nicoló Amati Copy")
"I had been thinking about buying a new instrument for a couple of years and had read that Chinese instruments were improving rapidly. I discovered "The Violin Project" online, did some research on the makers (Suo Ji Xue and Bai-Li Xing, in particular) and felt I should take a look. I live reasonably close to Offenbach anyway. Mr Muething was extremely welcoming and I tried at least a dozen instruments over the course of about 3 hours! Of these, I felt there were several that would have suited my needs – but the "King Joseph" copy made by Suo Ji Xue stood out for me. I found Mr Muething's patient advice extremely helpful in coming to my decision. I mostly play traditional fiddle music and swing jazz, so my considerations are not necessarily the same as those of a classical player. It is now nearly six months since I bought the instrument and it has been an inspiration. The tone is rich, smooth and chocolatey and beautifully balanced across the full range. The harmonics also respond very well. For years, I played a good quality Lamy violin made around 100 years ago in Mirecourt , France . This Ji violin is a far superior instrument, yet the Lamy would be more expensive. Musical colleagues have also commented that the tone has developed since they first heard it. Thank you for an excellent instrument. I would (and do) recommend The Violin Project to anyone interested in buying a new instrument." Edward W.* (05/09/10, on the "Ji Brothers Del Gesù King Joseph Copy")
"I wanted to send you a comment
for quite some time but I've been very busy lately. Now, in
the final days of the year, I have fund the time to write you these few
lines. Let me first thank you very much for
selling this outstanding instrument to me! Ever since
I purchased the Ji Brothers Del Gesù "Cannone" model this is the only violin
on which I've been playing. Never before have I reached this level of
satisfaction with a violin (And right from the start, too!).
Please extend my thanks to the Masters Ji for their excellent
work and thanks also to you and to Mr. Guenther (the violist) for your
excellent, professional (and patient) guidance during the test playing.
My colleagues in the orchestra have also been consistently
full of praise for the violin, and you can feel that it is
still improving noticeably with time ... I have recommended your
shop to other players and I sincerely hope that you will be getting new
inquiries very soon!" Jürgen
L.* (12/30/09, on the "Ji
Brothers Del Gesù Cannone")
"I can hardly wait to
be finishing the break-in process of my new violin, so I'm sending
you this message before. I am confident that I have made the right
choice and that the instrument I've purchased is not only
beautiful but also evenly balanced, sonorous and everything...
I was thankful for your expert advice - surely it must have been your
professional background [in classical music reviewing] that
enables you to hear the differences between the individual
instruments so clearly. I myself am still learning "how to listen", and
let me say that it was also impressive to be entering your
"cave of Ali Baba". A great selection to chose from! [Later
comment:] The violin is improving steadily from day to day,
spurring me to play more and more, even if my abilities are
limited. Practice makes perfect, doesn't it. ;=)René G.*, Metz* (08/27/09 + 09/06/09
(Update), on the "Ji Brothers Amati") "My
teacher didn't even want to let go of my violin!"
Matthias W.*,
Hannover (08/31/08, on the "Ji Brothers Del Gesù Cannone")
"I've been playing the violin I purchased at your place for
ten months now, and I would like to tell you that the sound
has improved tremendously! The g- and e-strings in particular
now have fantastic sound, and the playing gets easier and
easier. Double stops I can play more easily than ever before, and
the sound is developing nicely during the playing. The only thing that
I regret is that I didn't find a high quality violin like this
one decades earlier. The two bows also play very nicely."
*** "I've been
playing my violin so often lately that I hardly find the time for
anything else. I can only confirm that Pirastro's slogan I am so happy, I can't stop
playing is true. This violin is exactly the kind
I've been trying to find for many, many years. Not only is the
sound very sonorous and powerful, but it's so easy to play, the response
is terrific. And the bow is wonderful, too." ***
"I've now been playing the violin I purchased at
your shop for a longer time, and I would like to tell you that
is getting better and better steadily, the sound more and more
powerful. The bow is terrifc, too, and I cannot even
imagine being without this violin and bow ever again." *** "Last night I was approached
by onler violinist in the orchestra who congratulated me and said that
I was playing the best violin in the entire orchestra, and he enquired
some details about the instrument. This violinist is a
professional and in his younger years he played in the orchestra of the
Shah of Persia, he knows a lot about instrumentes. His comment
made me very happy." Gisela
S.*,
Hagen (04/09/08, 06/24/08, 01/17/09 & 06/27/09 on the
"Ji
Brothers Del Gesù The King") "The Ji violin
arrived on Friday. I am completely thrilled. Katherine has had
her first lesson since then, and her techer says that the girl seems
to feeling very comfortable playing this instrument. I think the sound
of the Ji Brothers Stradivari copy is simply terrific. It is
evenly balanced across the GDAE range. I am so happy that I
found your master-crafted violins on the web - and simply by accident, Great
violin sound for a great price. And I also like to thank you for your
expert and patient advice - what more could anyone ask for?
Several players in my own orchestra where I'm playing your Ji
Brothers Cannone copy asked me about your shop. The concertmaster of
likes my Cannone very much ("great potential" he said). My
daughter's teacher has also congratulated me on my instrument
and compared it to a more expensive new master violin by *****, saying
that the Ji is better. Naturally, I agree with her completely.
Bottom line: I am completely satisfied, and your approach is totally
convincing."
Michael T.*, Tegernheim
(01/17 - 02/24/08, on the "Ji Brothers Stradivari
& Del Gesù Cannone" models)
"The Ji Brothers Cannone violin
arrived with the case I ordered, both in perfect condition. Although
I've been playing the new violin only for a short time I can already
confirm that I am completely enthused by the sound. Yesterday
I recorded my own lesson so I could sit back and enjoy the
sound as a listener, too. This "experiment" has lead me to that the
conclusion that my Cannone sounds very much like Sarah Chang's
violin. I am really looking forward to enjoying this
instrument in its full glory once the break-in period is completed. I
am happy and satisfied with every penny I invested in my new
violin. My congrats to the maker: A superb violin! I also want
to thank you for the flawless shipping and handling procedure and your
expert guidance. I will heartily recommend your shop to other
players."

"We received the
violin last week. Thank you very much for a terrific instrument." Bernd M.*, Bruck/Austria
(05/07/07, on the "Ji

"Thank you very much for the beautiful
violin which arrived here on Friday in perfect condition. Rest
assured - this violin is a keeper! --- "Now that I've been playing the
instrument for quite some time I can happily report that the
sound is evolving constantly."
Erik
H.*, Frankfurt/former HR Radio Symphony violinist (11/06/06 und
11/18/06, on the "Ji Brothers Cannone")
For
more than two and a half decades, the Ji Brothers Workshop has been
making high-quality string instruments in a perfectly imitated
Italian style on demand for European luthiers - the latter
selling those instruments as their own. Only at our shop you
can purchase the violins from this distinguished workshop under their
own label, and at a very reasonable price!
For
their fine instruments, the Ji Brothers select only the highest-grade
tonewood, seasoned naturally for decades (the spruce tops for
their violins e.g. consist of 80+ years aged maple bought from
struck-down buildings - no commercial tone wood could ever be
economically seasoned for that long) - this is an aspect of
their craftsmanship the company is paying particular attention to,
because well-seasoned wood guarantees long-term
stability of sound. Also, the company's method of varnishing
and antiquing is unique, as you can see from the pictures
below. The choice of wood and the special manufacturing produce a
sound that many players in our shop have simply described as
"authentically Italian".
The
Ji Brothers violins represent the finest craftsmanship - care and
individuality in perfect mix. All
aspects of the making and varnishing down to the professional set-up
(completed in the US by the oldest of
the Ji Brothers) are up with the best of European violin making
traditions, but of course unlike their
European counterparts, their violins are both excellent AND affordable.
In
short: They are the perfect violins for you to improve your playing, if
you're a hobby player or ambitious student - and for the seasoned
professional to use as a concert instrument. You can now
purchase a professional level violin at a price unheard of in Europe
(or America).
Naturally
there's no comparing the superb price/performance ratio of the Ji
Brothers violins with the authentic antique instruments you
can buy for enormous amounts from luthiers, or at auctions.
And some of those aren't nowhere near as good as our expertly made new
ones. The only vintage instruments you can buy "on the cheap"
are just that: cheap.
The
sound of the Ji Brothers violins is sonorous and powerful, direct and
"warm", with an especially sweet tone on the e-string. They
can be used in orchestras, some even as instruments for
soloists. But they can just easily and comfortably be played by
advancing students and experienced amateur musicians.
We
have sold some of these wonderful yet affordable instruments to
professional players, and shown to many seasoned
pros outside of our shop. They all epxressed satisfaction and even
enthuasiasm for these violins. Many
an old pro (some from leading German orchestras) told us how
much he or she would have wished for
such a high-level violin "when we were young"!
A
fantastic offer for just over €2,000 - violins made by master makers,
guaranteed to get even better with time.
No
local luthier will be able to make you a comparable offer. A
professional violin for just two thousand bucks - it's unheard of.
You
shouldn't hestitate and get your Ji Brothers violin today - with a
price/performance ratio no other shop can match!
All
instruments can of course be test-played at our shop in Offenbach.

Please note that this "special" viola model is based on a concept developed by former viola virtuoso Lionel Tertis (1876-1975), who - after the end of his solo career - designed an instrument that is supposed to offer the player maximum tonal power at the required size. Its shape is inspired by the viola da gambas of the Baroque era.

*sold* master instruments by Ji Brothers (selection)

|
Ji Brothers Workshop - Master-Crafted Violins
Apart from the Ji Brothers themselves, there is a number of other experienced violin makers in their workshop who also craft high-quality instruments on their own. These excellent makers are using fine materials very close to the quality of those the Jis request for themselves: Old, selected spruce tops recovered from torn-down buildings (aged 50 years and more) and well-seasoned (12+ years), beautifully flamed maple for backs, ribs & necks. Fine wood & careful, masterly "single maker" craftsmanship result in violins very similar in style and quality to the Ji Master Violins - with an even(!) nicer price-tag. The fact that Ji Sr. sets them up himself in his smaller, Los Angeles-based workshop is merely the icing on the cake. The price/performance ratio is just unbelievable.
We thus recommend these beautifully made violins for senior students, very experienced hobby players and as second instruments for professional players.
